Yet beside the man on horseback, it also suggests another story, the steady and swift arrival of roads, commerce, settlement, and structures into a landscape already inhabited and culturally held.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe motel can be both shelter and symbol. Its sign speaks of hospitality while also carrying the layered history of encroachment. The Native chief carries a tradition older than the sign behind him. His robes hold generations of memory, while the motel speaks in the language of modern travel and passage.
